Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions

SPACE

SPACE is a parent-based treatment program designed for children and adolescents struggling with anxiety, OCD, and related challenges.

While children do not attend the sessions directly, they remain the primary focus of the treatment. The goal of the program is to help children feel less anxious and function more effectively.

SPACE is an appropriate treatment for many of the most common anxiety issues that children and adolescents face, including:

  • Separation anxiety

  • Social anxiety

  • Generalized anxiety

  • Fears and phobias

  • Illness and health anxiety

  • Selective mutism

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

Is SPACE right for you?

Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions is a program which designed to be educational and is not considered therapy; we do not conduct clinical assessments, provide diagnoses, or offer individualized treatment recommendations for your child.

What is SPACE and who is it for?

Developed by Dr. Eli Lebowitz at the Yale Child Study Center, SPACE is an innovative, evidence-based program designed to help treat children with anxiety, OCD, and related problems.

Who participates in treatment?

Parents and caregivers participate in the sessions. In most cases, the child or adolescent does not need to attend.

What happens in SPACE treatment?

The program focuses on changes parents can make to their own behaviour rather than trying to change the child directly. Parents learn to respond more supportively to their anxious child and reduce the accommodations previously made to the child’s symptoms.
